The Spencer M. Anderson Community Service Scholarship is a program offered through John W. Hereford Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington to enable well deserving members of our clubs to seek a college education. This program was established in 1993 in cooperation with The Marshall University Foundation, Inc. for the educational enrichment of our members.
This annual award, valued at $3000 per year, will be made to students entering their freshman year at Marshall University. The award maybe continued for 4 years provided the student is full time and maintains a 2.5 overall GPA.
Recipients are recommended by the staff based on their volunteer service to the community and their involvement in the activities of our two clubs, located at the B.C. McGinnis Clubs in Guyandotte, and the Henrietta Payne Club at 14th Street West. To date, 10 members of the John W. Hereford Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs have benefitted from the Spencer M. Anderson Scholarship.
This year our scholarship team met with and interviewed applicants for the Spencer M Anderson Community Service Scholarship, and it was awarded to Alannah Spearman. Alannah is a first semester freshman at Marshall University, she is a graduate of Huntington High School, and was a longtime member at the John W. Hereford Boys and Girls Clubs of Huntington... While a member, she helped tutor younger members in the classroom and represented the Club with Prevention Empowerment Partnership (PEP). She was also involved with SADD (Students Against Destructive Decisions) and volunteered with Special Olympics. We congratulate Ms. Spearman and wish her continued success as she pursues her degree, a Bachelors of Art in Social Work.
We currently have 314 registered members between both clubs. In this school year, we have served 185 members, averaging 90 members a day total between the two clubs.
It was our honor to again host the local Girls' basketball League, and bring the local communities together to support our young athletes.
We served 26,005 meals from October 2021 to October 2022.
